Did I just read this? Please do not cut up your oldest credit cards!

I was just reading an article on digging yourself out of debt. Had some okay ideas I guess, till it came to #5, telling you to cut up your old credit cards and just keep two.

Okay STOP!!!!! Don't ever do this. Especially when trying to get out of debt.

1. First of all if you truly have an emergency you might need the credit. First of all I consider a real emergency something like this (not the need for new shoes) my daughter gets really sick. The Dr. prescribes an expensive medication and my insurance will not cover it. Yes, I'm going to fight the insurance company to cover it, but my daughter needs medicine NOW! This is an emergency. Hopefully I am at the point I can use my savings to pay, but the people who say to cut up credit cards are assuming you are deep in debt, so no savings.

My saying is that you have to take responsibility and control of yourself. This is one of those times. You need to make yourself not spend on the credit card unless you can and will pay it off each month, and you are earning rewards.

2. If you are really in debt deep than most of your credit cards are close to being maxed out. If you were to close the credit cards with the oldest history do you know what will happen to your credit score? It will crash! Length of time an account is open is part of the equation for determining your score.

3. So you don't care about your score, well you will care about this. As soon as your score tanks from you closing your accounts, your other creditors will say "holly batman we have a problem". You will immediately be rate jacked for something called "universal default". Wait you say, you have never defaulted, never been late even, so why raise your rates? Well, you now look even worse than you did before because your score dropped. It's much worse than just being maxed out. The credit card company does not care that you are closing your accounts to stop yourself from spending. If they knew this they would close the rest of your accounts instead of just raising your interest rate. What creditor wants to offer their money to someone who sears off spending? Remember the creditor is out to make money, they look for any way to make more and when you become a greater credit risk they can now charge you more money.

What are you to do? Well, control yourself. You can not spend what you do not have. The small sacrifice of not spending now will guarantee you much happiness in the future! If that does not work put each credit card in a container with water, freeze. If you have an emergency get out the hair dryer and melt. If it's not an emergency you will feel completely stupid trying to break the ice!

Make More Money? Spend Less Money? What to do? BOTH!
I really respect anyone who wants to better their life or those of others. But wanting to and actually doing it are two different things. You need to have both in your mind, but the most important thing is action. You know the people who are always coming up with these "great" ideas to make more money, but they never do anything about it! Imagine if they projected the creative energy into physical energy, Wow! They could be mega billionaires! So for you all, I want you to get working on your ideas. Just start. The worse thing that can happen if it doesn't work out is you fail. The only thing that can happen if you do nothing is fail. Enough said? Check out my page on ways to make more money...  As Always, I welcome your thoughts!
